Our Enemies are Watching us on Cyber Monday – Staying Safe by Kevin Freeman (Nov. 24, 2017)

WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — Pounding the pavement on Black Friday is for some a tradition.

But since 2005, millions have preferred to scour for steals online, on Cyber Monday.

“This year we predict about 73 million consumers shopping on Cyber Monday,” said The National Retail Federation’s Ana Serafin Smith in an interview this week.

As convenient as shopping online has become, the list of risks is long, says Kevin Freeman, author of Game Plan: How to Protect Yourself from the Coming Cyber-Economic Attack.

“If you put your personal information out there in an unsecured way it will be taken, it’s like leaving your door unlocked,” Freeman said.

Here are some tips:
Use a store’s actual website, not a search engine, to shop
Watch out for social media scams.
Use different passwords for retail sites than you use for banking
Never use your credit card on unsecured or public Wi-Fi.

Many experts say hackers foreign and domestic are getting more aggressive, the more we stay logged on.

“My biggest concern is that we view the globe as a marketplace. Our enemies view it as a battlespace,” Freeman said.

In a conflict where not just bank accounts, but identities, are at stake the weapons of war are harder and harder to detect.
